🌐World Kidney Day 2026: Kidney Health For All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet

Today, as we join hands globally to mark World Kidney Day, let us reflect on the pressing burden that kidney diseases impose on millions around the world.

🤔Did you know?

Kidney diseases are silent invaders, often progressing without noticeable symptoms until they reach advanced stages. Today, chronic kidney disease affects 1 in 10 people worlwide, making it a major and growing global health challenge.

For many patients, survival depends on life-sustaining kidney replacement therapies such as dialysis or transplantation.

🌍Our kidneys, our planet:

This year’s campaing highlights the strong connection between human health and environmental sustainability.

Environmental challenges such as air pollution, heat stress, dehydration, and extreme weather can increase the risk of kidney disease and accelerate its porgression. At the same time, treatments like dialysis require large amounts of water, energy, and single-use plastics, creating a feedback loop in which kidney disease and climate change worsen each other.

🚨Time for Action:

At the 78th World Health Assembly, the World Health Organization (WHO) adopted its first-ever resolution deducated to kidney disease, elevaing kidney health as a global public health priority.

Protecting kidney health means acting early and thinking sustainably:

  • Prioritize prevention, early detection, and timely management of kidney disease through simple blood and urine tests.
  • Support equitable access to kidney care and transplantation worldwide.
  • Encourage innovation in sustainable and environmentally responsible treatments, including transforming dialysis towards more sustainable models.

👥Community Matters:

Let’s stand together to support those affected, break the stigma surrounding kidney diseases, and work together to protect both people and the planet.
